How to Check Oil in a Car

  1. Make sure the car is off and the engine has had enough time to cool down.
  2. Open the hood, and locate the dipstick.
  3. Pull out the dipstick, and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.
  4. Stick the dipstick back in all the way.
  5. Pull out the dipstick again, and examine the tip.
  6. The oil should reach from the end of the tip of the dipstick to the top of the crosshatched area. If the oil does not reach the crosshatched area, add a quart of oil.

Do You Check Oil Hot or Cold?

Is it safe to check the oil when your engine is hot? Do you check oil hot or cold? You’ll want to check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommendations. Most manufacturers used to recommend allowing the engine to cool down before checking. This is because oil expands when it is hot and needs time to settle into the oil pan. But, many newer dipsticks have been calibrated to accurately read oil level even when the oil is hot.

In addition, even when it is recommended that the oil be checked when the engine has cooled, some manufacturers recommend warming the engine up first and then letting it cool.

1. Do I check my car’s oil when the engine is hot or cold?

  • Answer: You should consult your owner’s manual for your vehicle manufacturer’s specific recommendations. Historically, most manufacturers recommended letting the engine cool down first because oil expands when hot and needs time to settle into the oil pan. However, many newer vehicles feature dipsticks calibrated to read accurately even when the oil is hot. Some manufacturers also recommend warming the engine up first and then letting it cool down before checking.

2. What are the steps to check the oil level using a dipstick?

  • Answer: You can check your car’s oil level in six steps:
    1. Ensure the car is turned off and the engine has had enough time to cool down.
    2. Open the hood and find the dipstick.
    3. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a rag or a paper towel.
    4. Insert the dipstick back in all the way.
    5. Pull the dipstick out again to examine the tip.
    6. Look at the oil level; it should reach from the end of the dipstick tip to the top of the crosshatched area.

3. How do I know if I need to add more oil?

  • Answer: When you examine the tip of the dipstick, the oil level should sit within the crosshatched area (reaching from the end of the tip to the top of the crosshatched section). If the oil does not reach the crosshatched area, you should add a quart of oil.

4. Why does oil expand and need time to settle?

  • Answer: When the engine is hot, the oil expands and moves through the engine. It requires time to settle back down into the oil pan, which is why older manufacturer recommendations advised allowing the engine to cool before taking a reading.
